WHO WE ARE
About The Other Magazine
Founded out of a desire to fill the void between underground culture and mainstream narrative, The Other Magazine is a regional counterculture lifestyle publication dedicated to telling the stories that matter. We spotlight voices, perspectives, and experiences that traditional outlets overlook, from craft growers and legacy growers to cultural icons and creative trailblazers.
Our Mission
The Other Magazine exists to educate, inspire, and connect the community across New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley. We provide a platform where stories of culture, community, creativity, and cannabis converge, blending lifestyle, advocacy, artistry, and local insight into one compelling editorial experience.

Persimmon Olive Oil Cake Recipe
I wrote this recipe when I was submitting a creative essay to a food writing journal. I was writing a comedic retelling of how I discovered my extremely annoying food allergies while becoming a cannabis baker. The story goes that I developed an oral allergy syndrome, and basically had to determine what fruits I could […]
Lighting Up As ‘Donnie Darko’ Turns 25
One of the strangest movies of the early aughts is celebrating its 25th anniversary with nationwide screenings on October 2-4, courtesy of Fathom Entertainment. This 2001 movie, directed by Richard Kelly and produced by Flower Films, almost never saw a theatrical release due to the awful timing right after 9/11 when no one cared to […]

As he remembered […]

Canna-dates: Hall of Gems and Minerals
My favorite room in all of New York City is the Allison and Roberto Mignone Hall of Gems and Minerals at the American Museum of Natural History. I think I’ve been there five times now since it opened in June of 2021—once a year! It contains 11,000sq ft of total space, with more than 5,000 […]

Retail Profile: Jupiter Cafe
Olean is not where the cannabis story usually starts. It’s a small city in western New York, hard against the Pennsylvania line. At the edge of the Seneca Nation’s Allegany Territory, unregulated cannabis is technically just down the road. Most people chasing a dispensary license picked Brooklyn or the Hudson Valley. The team behind Jupiter […]

Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food
My wife took a bite of a Persian cucumber and said, “Oh, this is really good.” That was the Farm to People one. Then I tried it. An explosion of flavor, sweet and juicy. Way better than the plastic clamshell of Persian cukes we’d picked up at the supermarket the day before, and those are […]
